Theatre Course for Jewish and Arab Youth
The common theatre course for Jewish and Arab Youth has operated since the 2006 school year, after operating for about two years as a common afternoon activity for Jewish and Arab Youth from Shefa-'Amr, Harduf and the wider local communities. This course is meant for pupils from grades 10 – 12. It is sponsored by the Galileo Trust and is recognized by the Ministry of Education as a matriculation certificate course.
The studies include theory and practical lessons as well as various artistic projects, including a production of a play in English by the pupils of class 10. The Israeli production team is joined by two English producers who reach Israel around December. Each year the theatre class travels to England where they work on and perform their play around the country, before returning to Israel to perform there as well.
In addition to the artistic work and owing to it, a deep process of group building takes place at the social level, which turns it from a union of two different groups, to a formation of one group.
In grade 11 the dramatic work focuses on dialogues, and in grade 12 the pupils are asked to create an artistic project in small groups. This theatre course was built from a sense of urgency in the face of the situation in Israel amongst members of different cultures, religions and nations. Israeli youth group up into a harsh reality of alienation, fear, and lack of openness and communication toward one's fellow man. As educators, we feel the necessity to help youth develop the inner strength required to meet the challenges posed by the world in a responsible and positive manner, from a sense of existential security. This course was built from the belief that the art of drama, which is the art of conversation, can form the ground for an active and aware encounter between young people, one in which the experience of being different – the experience of "the drama" – can in fact help them develop a free individual relationship.
The theatre course at the Ka'abiyye high school was opened in 2010 in good-willed collaboration between the Ka'abiyye school director and the Sha'ar La'Adam - Bab Lil'Insan team.
Moreover, five years ago, Sha'ar La'Adam - Bab Lilinsan initiated the opening of a theatre course at the comprehensive school in Shefa-'Amr, which became a great success. Today, the course in Shefa-'Amr encompasses three grades – 10, 11 and 12. It is a regular matriculation course in which the pupils prepare for an exam at 5 unit level, and additionally, undergo a special experience in the social sphere, especially through the encounter and joint work with the Jewish school at Harduf.
