The Galilean Parliament
A Public Parliament for a Common Jewish-Arab Galilee
These days we at Sha'ar La'Adam – Bab Lil'Insan are acting to establish a public Galilean parliament appealing to the mayors and heads of regional councils in the area, as well as to social activists interested in participating and creating initiatives, activities and shared dialogue amongst Jewish and Arab people.
The Galilean parliament is intended to be based on values of peace, partnership and mutual respect, and it will deal with essential issues between Arabs and Jews which prevent the Galilee from being a common shared space which provides for the needs of all its residents. The parliament shall occupy itself with finding advanced creative solutions, both practical and sustainable, which can offer an answer to the existing conflict.
We strive to create a common vision of a joint Galilean society common to both Arabs and Jews – one based on egalitarian justice with regard to division of resources and to human respect.
The mayors and heads of regional councils in the area, the social activists and other professionals, shall work together toward creating a deep change in the Galilee, a change that will promote the region and make it into a common region shared by all its citizens. They will do this through dealing with the central daily issues of land, accommodation, education, health and economic development.
We hope that together we shall manage to create trust between Arabs and Jews through building non-violent strategies for action, promoting tolerance and empowering the weakened populations in our region.
The Galilean Parliament model will be the first of its kind in Israel, offering a model of civil peace-making, and it will be possible to apply it in other areas in Israel and in Palestine.
